This novella by Hubbard is extremely fun and entertaining. And, yes I did say swashbuckling (as in pirates) and fantasy. The story, written in 1940, is quite original and is very much along the lines of tales that are found in, for those who remember, Rod Serling's "The Twilight Zone." The protagonist, a struggling New York pianist named Mike de Wolf, suddenly finds himself on a Caribbean beach as a 17th century villain (Spanish Admiral and Pirate, Miguel de Lobo) in his friend's (Horace Hackett) upcoming but behind-the-deadline high-seas novel, "Blood and Loot." Knowing as he does the fate of the bad guy in virtually anything written by his friend, Mike must use what little free will he finds that he has in order to work out his hoped-for escape from the inevitable. To make matters worse, there are those times when Horace changes his mind and, thus, changes the story, further complicating Mike’s plight. Along the way, Mike’s encounters in this fictional - yet possibly deadly for him - world are expertly handled. A very enjoyable escape from the every day world and recommended to anyone, especially adventure, fantasy and science fiction readers.Product details

Gripping story. Kept pulling me to read more. So sad it was over, but exciting as I read. Love his style of writing and all of his Genre.
I found it very entertaining. I have always loved the pulp literature of those days and this is up there with the best. The characters are quirky but real and the reader gets pulled into very fine ride with them. As far as I can recall this was the first time that particular plot gimmick was used and it has been copied successfully several times since by other writers.
I won't give away the ending, but the way the hero gets out of the tight spot he's in was positively brilliant. Just a wonderful read.
I love old pulp magazine writing, and this is one of those. Ron Hubbard, before he founded Scientology, was a pulp writer of note. This story is just plain fun. Imagine a hack pulp writer forced to live out the story he is writing. Enjoy.
This is one of my favorite books. Being an author I enjoyed the idea of some one being trapped in my book as a character. This is a great concept and has sprung many other similar stories such as the film "Stranger than Fiction"
Typical LRH fare, a very easy and enjoyable read, except for the occasional misspellede or missing word or line. Since this seeems to occur frequently in editions of books, I'm inclined to believe it is a result of the scanning process. I was disappointed, however, that more pages were devoted to advertising an anthology of SF from the period than were contained in the story itself.
What an absolute romp! When Horace Hackett (love that name) is convincing his publisher that he really does have a story for the advance payment against royalties, I felt myself squirming right along with him! Funny story line. Fabulous, witty dialogue. The hero (villain) Mike de Wolf is caught in a life that he had no making of; he is at the mercy of Horace's imagination. When the plot twists occur, as a writer, I laughed out loud at the changes. Fiction writers will thoroughly enjoy this story, and will see themselves as their own "Typewriters in The Sky."
Ron L Hubbard’s pulp fiction is a lot of fun to read. At least, this is true of his pulp fiction written prior to being swallowed alive by his ego. That is, when he was more concerned with delivering his messianic message rather than telling a story. At his very best, his writing was not on a par with Isaac Asimov, Robert Sheckley, Ray Bradbury, or Robert A. Heinlein, but what I have read I’ve enjoyed a great deal. (Heinlein‘s fiction also suffered when his ego got out of control). “Typewriter In the Sky” took the clever idea of a man being trapped as a character in his friend’s pirate novel, and carried it to what might have been a predictable ending, but managed to be satisfying nonetheless.
